Hey guys, Just got my acount opened and have a few questions about Mexican beetles. I´m living and working in Mexico and can buy a low mileage beetle from the 2000´s without getting into import and registration issues, what are the advantages/disadvantages to the Mexican bettles with a beam up front, besides it being a late model.
I´ll just looking to get something to get me on the road cheap. Would have to be lowered.
Thanks for any imput |

I don't have any firsthand experience, but I have heard some things.
There are cheapness/quality issues for sure. The mexican factory figured out "easier" ways of doing things, and the only reason they were making them was because they were cheap as hell.
That being said, you shouldn't have to deal with rust issues, and parts should be easy as hell to find. Something tells me you don't mind tinkering with them or you probably wouldn't be here.
Take what I said with a grain of salt because I don't have any firsthand knowledge. |

| my buddy bought a brand new 2001 Beetle and swapped everything onto a 74 Canadian Beetle pan. He then brought it back into Canada as a resto'd 74. He did the full swap while he was in Mexico (he drove the 74 down). You can give him an email at btweddle@gmail.com (Bruce). |

A friend has a 96 mexican. It has a kilo speedo in it. It has around 50-60K miles on it. The engine is fuel injected dual port. The trans is a swing axle.(like a 68)
It looks like everything is OG and never been apart, it starts fine, runs great. The body looks like its based on a 74 standard beetle.
So far no problems, the longest trip he has taken it on was around 300 miles (gas mileage was good) with 100 or so around town.
As far as the body goes, basic, no bodyside mldgs. no vents in the hood, no turn signals on the fenders, painted bumpers with the front turn signals in them. Doesn't this sound like cal-look from the 80s?
The body is built well.
You wouldn't know it was a 96 Mexican unless you really looked for it. |
